---------- Notes On The Name ----------

Astronomy: The Earth's axis - or axle on which it rotates, is tilted 23 1/2 degres. The Earth is also like a top that is slowing down, so the axis in addition to being tilted, has a wobble to it as well. this is not noticable in our daily lives, because it takes 26,000 years to 'wobble' once around. Because of this wobble component, The seasons are changing ever so slightly each year. The point at which day and night are of egual length is known as an equinox. There are two each year, marking the beginnings of Spring and Autumn. This change is known as the 'Precession of the Equinoxes'. So each year, the Sun appears to be in a certain constellation when Spring starts. The change is VERY SLOW, and currently Spring ocurrs when the Sun is in Pices. Each of the 12 constellations the Sun passes through on it's journey are on a path called the Zodiac. These 12 constellations then are those used by Astrologers. Astrologers do not follow the constellation boundaries exactly however, rather they divide the sky up into 30 degree segments.

Mythology: Aquarius is the water carrier or cup bearer, the eleventh sign in the zodiac (or path that the sun travels). The best-known myth identifies Aquarius with Ganymede, a beautiful youth with whom Zeus fell in love, and whom he (in the disguise of an eagle, represented as the constellation Aquila) carried off to Olympus to be cup bearer to the gods. Crater is sometimes identified as his cup. Aquarius generally resembles the figure of a man, and when considering fainter humanly visible stars, it takes on the image of a man with a bucket from which is pouring a stream. Aquarius was also identified as the pourer of the waters which flooded the earth in the Great Flood, in the ancient Greek version of the myth. As such, the constellation Eridanus was sometimes identified as being a river poured out by Aquarius. It may also, together with the constellation Pegasus, be part of the origin of the myth of the Mares of Diomedes, which forms one of The Twelve Labours of Heracles (or Hercules in the Roman Mythology). Its association with pouring out rivers, and the nearby constellation of Capricornus, may be the source of the myth of the Augean stable, which forms another of the labours.

Astrology: The Western astrological sign Aquarius of the tropical zodiac (January 21 to February 19) differs from the astronomical constellation and the Hindu astrological sign of the sidereal zodiac (February 16 to March 11). Individuals born under the Aquarius sign are, by western astrologers, thought to have a creative, progressive (sometimes rebellious), and independent character. According to astrology-inspired New Age mythology, and according to the musical rendition by The 5th Dimension, we're now living at the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius. The beginning and ending of each Age is marked by the arrival of the Vernal or Spring Equinox in that particular section of sky.the point at which the periods of night and day being equal (the equinox) changes slightly each year. Each sign represents a 'Great Month', lasting roughly 2100 years. The twelve Great Months make up one 'Great Year' lasting approximately 26,000 years, coinciding with one 'wobble' of the axis. Although we are technically in the Age of Pices, Asrologers often refer to Orbs of Influence, and the effect they have on our daily lives. We frequently hear that we are at the 'dawning' or beginning of the age of Aquarius, even though technically it will not happen until around the year 2600.
