Us The Jefferson Township Middle School 8th Grade English Blue team had been reading Jack London's ' Call of the Wild'. The book is set in the Klondike gold rush period, and told from the point of view of a dog, a mixed breed, part Saint Bernard. As it is commonly known in the Township that we have Saints (They are hard to miss) we were asked to do a presentation on the history of the breed as a wrap up to the unit. MajorSandi and I went to work and compiled a Power-Point © presentation for the students, and also arrived with two of our Saints, A-Jay and Polaris. The dogs of course caused quite a stir in the school. After all, how often do you see a dog, no less a giant one, in school? Topics covered included the breed's origin in the Alps, their use byUs the Monks for companionship and rescue work. Also covered were how others used the breed for work, clearing land by dragging felled trees and pulling carts loaded with goods to deliver. Today's Saint Bernard of course, although still kept at the monastary in the Saint Bernard pass, is mainly for compainionship and sporting events. On this occasion A-Jay wore his carting harness while Polaris paraded around the room greeting students with her never-failing friendly disposition.
